RUNNING & ENDURANCE
Sports Massage for Runners
Marathon block, park run PB or first 10k — the mileage always finds the weakest link. Targeted work on calves, hips and IT bands so you get to the start line healthy.

Running is a repetitive impact sport. Every mile puts thousands of near-identical loading cycles through the same chain — calf, achilles, knee, IT band, hip. When mileage climbs faster than the tissue adapts, the result is the familiar list: runner's knee, shin splints, IT band syndrome, tight calves that never let go.
Most running injuries are load problems, not damage. The fix is a combination of soft-tissue work to restore tissue quality and honest advice about the training that caused it.
Derek Lyons has 30+ years of hands-on experience with runners, cyclists, fighters and IFBB pro bodybuilders. Running sessions assess your whole chain — not just the sore bit — and treat the actual driver. Bethnal Green and Colchester clinics, same-week appointments most weeks.
BENEFITS
What Sports Massage Does for Runners Athletes
Calf & Achilles Relief
Restore length and quality in the calf complex — the tissue that fails first in most runners.
Runner's Knee Support
Address the hip and quad restrictions that drive anterior knee pain, not just the knee itself.
IT Band & Hip Work
Free the TFL, glutes and lateral chain so the outside of the knee stops flaring at mile eight.
Faster Between Sessions
Clear soreness after long runs so your next quality session isn't compromised.
Stride Efficiency
Better hip extension and ankle range means less energy leaked per stride.
Race Prep & Recovery
Lighter tune-up work before race day, deeper reset in the week after.
COMMON INJURIES
Injuries We Treat in Runners
Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain)
Pain at the front of the knee, worse on stairs and downhills. Usually driven by tight quads and weak hip control rather than the knee itself.
IT band syndrome
Sharp lateral knee pain that appears at a predictable distance. Treatment targets the TFL, glutes and lateral quad, plus cadence and load advice.
Shin splints (MTSS)
Aching along the inside of the shin, typically after a mileage jump or a surface change. Calf and tibialis work plus a load reset.
Achilles tendinopathy
Morning stiffness that eases as you warm up. Soft-tissue work on the calf plus a graded loading plan is the evidence-based route back.
Chronic calf tightness
Constant tension that never fully releases. Often a sign the calf is doing work the glutes should share.
Plantar heel pain
First-step-in-the-morning pain under the heel. Treating the calf chain matters as much as the foot.

RECOVERY ADVICE
How to Recover Properly Between Sessions
- 01
Increase mileage slowly
Most running injuries Derek treats came from a sudden jump in volume or intensity. Roughly 10% a week keeps tissue adapting rather than failing.
- 02
Strength train twice a week
Calf raises, single-leg work and hip strength do more to prevent injury than any amount of stretching.
- 03
Book deeper work on easy weeks
Schedule deep tissue during a down week or after a long run, never in the 48 hours before a key session or race.
- 04
Rotate your shoes
Two pairs in rotation vary the loading pattern slightly and reduce repetitive stress on the same tissue.
- 05
Don't run through sharp pain
Dull, symmetrical ache is training. Sharp, one-sided pain that worsens as you run is a signal to stop and get it assessed.

“I had a chronic shoulder issue after a cycling accident years back and after seeing Derek I finally started back to recovery. Aside from the incredible sports massage, he set me up with some strengthening exercises and I can finally sleep on my left side again. 10/10, would recommend.”
