BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU & GRAPPLING
Sports Massage for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Rolling five nights a week grinds down the neck, grip and hips. Deep, specific soft-tissue work so you can keep training without the chronic stiffness that ends most BJJ careers.

BJJ is uniquely punishing because the load is isometric and constant. You hold grips until your forearms burn, defend pressure with your neck, and spend rounds in deep hip positions that most bodies never visit. Nothing tears — everything just slowly tightens.
The result is the classic grappler profile: stiff neck, locked thoracic spine, chronically tight hips and adductors, and forearms that never fully recover. Left alone it becomes the reason people stop training in their forties.
Derek Lyons has spent 30+ years treating grapplers, fighters and IFBB pro bodybuilders. BJJ sessions target the specific tissue that mat time overloads, plus the mobility work that keeps your guard and your knees healthy. Bethnal Green and Colchester clinics with same-week availability.
BENEFITS
What Sports Massage Does for BJJ Athletes
Hip & Guard Mobility
Release adductors, hip flexors and glutes so guard retention doesn't cost you range.
Neck Protection
Ease the deep neck and trap tension from stacking, pressure passing and defending chokes.
Grip Recovery
Targeted forearm and elbow work for the gi-grip fatigue every BJJ player carries.
Thoracic Rotation
Free the upper back so you can invert, shrimp and frame without compensating.
Train More Often
Recover faster between rolls so five sessions a week stays sustainable.
Comp Prep & Reset
Sharper before competition, deeper reset after — timed around your calendar.
COMMON INJURIES
Injuries We Treat in BJJ
Chronic neck stiffness
From bridging, stacking and defending pressure. Deep cervical and trap release plus mobility restores rotation and eases headaches.
Golfer's elbow (grip elbow)
Endless gi grips overload the forearm flexors and their attachment at the elbow. Focused soft-tissue work plus grip load management.
Hip and adductor tightness
Guard work holds the hips in end range for hours a week. Treatment restores range without losing the strength you need there.
Lower back and QL pain
Shrimping, inverting and defending from bottom load the lumbar spine. We treat the hips and QL together.
Knee irritation from guard
Half guard and knee shield positions stress the medial knee. Release the surrounding tissue and address load through the hip.
Shoulder and rotator cuff strain
Frames, underhooks and cranked kimuras. Cuff release plus scapular work keeps the shoulder tracking properly.

RECOVERY ADVICE
How to Recover Properly Between Sessions
- 01
Treat the neck before it's chronic
Neck stiffness is the single most common long-term BJJ complaint. Monthly maintenance beats years of restricted rotation.
- 02
Give your grips a day off
One no-gi or drilling session a week reduces forearm and elbow load more than any amount of stretching.
- 03
Mobilise hips after class, not before
90/90 switches and a couch stretch when warm holds range far better than cold stretching at the start of class.
- 04
Tap early in training
Nothing costs grapplers more mat time than ego. A tapped kimura costs a second; a defended one costs three months.
- 05
Book after comp, not just before
A deeper reset session in the week after competition clears accumulated damage and shortens the flat period.

“I had a chronic shoulder issue after a cycling accident years back and after seeing Derek I finally started back to recovery. Aside from the incredible sports massage, he set me up with some strengthening exercises and I can finally sleep on my left side again. 10/10, would recommend.”
