Boxing is the most repetitive of the combat sports. Thousands of punches a week travel the same path through the same tissue, and the body adapts by getting tight exactly where you need it to stay mobile — the thoracic spine, the lats, the front of the shoulder and the neck.
Add the sustained guard position, the rotation of every hook, and the shock loading through the wrists and hands, and it's easy to see why boxers pick up shoulder impingement and neck stiffness long before they pick up an acute injury.
Derek Lyons has 30+ years treating fighters, bodybuilders and strength athletes. Boxing sessions focus on restoring rotation and shoulder mechanics so your punch output doesn't cost you range. Bethnal Green and Colchester clinics, same-week slots most weeks.
BENEFITS
What Sports Massage Does for Boxing Athletes
Shoulder Mobility
Free the front of the shoulder and lats so your guard stays high without fatigue.
Faster Hands
Release rotational restrictions through the thoracic spine so power transfers cleanly.
Neck & Jaw Relief
Ease the trap and neck tension that builds from holding guard round after round.
Hand & Forearm Care
Targeted forearm, wrist and hand work for the grip and impact load of bag work.
Between-Camp Recovery
Reset accumulated load so each new camp starts from a clean baseline.
Sparring Recovery
Flush out soreness after hard spars and get back to sharp technical work sooner.
COMMON INJURIES
Injuries We Treat in Boxing
Shoulder impingement
The most common boxing complaint. Repetitive punching tightens the front of the shoulder and pinches the rotator cuff. Treatment frees the cuff and resets scapular control.
Neck and upper trap strain
From holding guard and absorbing head movement volume. Deep release plus mobility work eases stiffness and tension headaches.
Wrist and hand overload
Impact through the hands adds up. We work the forearm flexors and extensors and address wrist stiffness before it becomes chronic.
Lower back tightness
Rotation and stance load the lumbar spine and QL. Treating the hips usually releases the back.
Rib and intercostal tension
Body shots and heavy rotation leave the intercostals guarded. Gentle rib work restores breathing depth.
Calf tightness from footwork
Constant time on the balls of the feet loads the calves. Release plus ankle mobility keeps footwork light.

RECOVERY ADVICE
How to Recover Properly Between Sessions
- 01
Treat the shoulder before it hurts
Impingement is the injury that ends boxing seasons. A monthly maintenance session is far cheaper than eight weeks out.
- 02
Open the thoracic spine daily
Two minutes of open-book rotations and foam roller extensions after training preserves the range your punches rely on.
- 03
Wrap properly, every session
Most hand and wrist problems Derek sees are preventable. Rushed wraps on bag day cause months of trouble.
- 04
Sequence deep work away from spars
Book deeper sessions the day after hard sparring, not the day before — you want to be fresh, not tender.
- 05
Balance the pull
Boxing is all push. Rows and face pulls plus regular soft-tissue work keep the shoulders sitting where they should.

“I had a chronic shoulder issue after a cycling accident years back and after seeing Derek I finally started back to recovery. Aside from the incredible sports massage, he set me up with some strengthening exercises and I can finally sleep on my left side again. 10/10, would recommend.”
