ROAD, TRACK & ENDURANCE CYCLING
Sports Massage for Cyclists
Hours in one position leave the hip flexors short, the glutes quiet and the lower back complaining. Targeted work that restores position, power and comfort on the bike.

Cycling is a closed-chain, fixed-position sport. Your feet don't move, your hips travel through a short repeated arc, and your upper body holds one posture for hours. The tissue adapts exactly as you'd expect: short hip flexors, tight quads and ITBs, underused glutes, a locked thoracic spine and a lower back doing work it shouldn't.
Most cyclists don't get acute injuries — they get slowly worse positions and a nagging lower back or knee. Soft-tissue work restores the range that lets you hold an efficient position, and takes the pressure off the tissue that's compensating.
Derek Lyons has 30+ years treating endurance athletes, fighters and IFBB pro bodybuilders. Cycling sessions target the hip and back chain that riding compresses, and pair treatment with practical position and load advice. Bethnal Green and Colchester clinics, same-week availability.
BENEFITS
What Sports Massage Does for Cyclists Athletes
Hip Flexor Release
Restore length to the psoas and quads that hours in the saddle keep permanently short.
Lower Back Relief
Ease the erector and QL tension that turns long rides into a nagging back ache.
More Power Through Glutes
Free the hips so the glutes contribute properly instead of leaving the quads to do everything.
IT Band & Knee Care
Address the lateral tension behind most cyclists' outer knee pain.
Faster Between Rides
Flush heavy legs after big weekend mileage so Tuesday's intervals still count.
Neck & Shoulder Comfort
Release the upper back and neck load from holding an aero position for hours.
COMMON INJURIES
Injuries We Treat in Cyclists
Cycling lower back pain
The most common complaint. Usually short hip flexors and a locked thoracic spine forcing the lumbar spine to compensate — treating the hips fixes most cases.
IT band / lateral knee pain
Outer knee pain that builds with mileage. TFL, glute and lateral quad work plus a saddle height check.
Anterior knee pain
Front-of-knee ache from high gearing, low cadence or a saddle set too low. Quad release plus load and cadence advice.
Neck and upper trap strain
From holding the head up in a low position for hours. Deep trap and cervical release restores comfort on long rides.
Hip flexor tightness
That stiff, blocked feeling when you stand up off the bike. Responds quickly to consistent soft-tissue work and mobility.
Calf and achilles tightness
Repetitive pedalling with limited ankle range. Release plus mobility keeps the ankle moving through the stroke.

RECOVERY ADVICE
How to Recover Properly Between Sessions
- 01
Stand up and stretch mid-ride
A minute out of the saddle every 20 minutes on long rides keeps the hip flexors from locking down completely.
- 02
Do the hip work you avoid
Couch stretch, 90/90 and glute bridges three times a week does more for cycling back pain than any bike upgrade.
- 03
Get a bike fit if pain is positional
If pain is consistent and one-sided, treatment plus a proper fit works far better than either on its own.
- 04
Book deep work after big weekends
Monday or Tuesday after a big Saturday and Sunday, not the day before a key session or sportive.
- 05
Load the posterior chain off the bike
Deadlifts, hip thrusts and rows counter the flexed cycling posture and keep the glutes contributing.

“I had a chronic shoulder issue after a cycling accident years back and after seeing Derek I finally started back to recovery. Aside from the incredible sports massage, he set me up with some strengthening exercises and I can finally sleep on my left side again. 10/10, would recommend.”
