MMA & CAGE SPORTS
Sports Massage for MMA Fighters
Fight camp punishes everything at once — neck, hips, shoulders, grip. Deep, targeted bodywork that keeps you training through camp instead of pulling out of it.

MMA loads the body in more directions than almost any other sport. Striking rotates the spine and hammers the hips, wrestling compresses the neck and lower back, and grappling leaves the forearms, shoulders and adductors permanently tight. Over an eight-week camp that accumulated load is what turns a small niggle into a withdrawal.
Derek Lyons has spent over 30 years working hands-on with fighters, IFBB pro bodybuilders and strength athletes. MMA sessions at DL Performance Therapy are structured around your camp — heavier release work early, lighter flush and mobility work as you approach fight week.
You'll be assessed before anything is treated: what's tight, what's weak, what's actually causing the pain rather than just where you feel it. Sessions run from the Bethnal Green clinic at Muscle Works and from Colchester, with same-week slots most weeks.
BENEFITS
What Sports Massage Does for MMA Athletes
Train Through Camp
Clear accumulated tension weekly so small niggles never become forced rest days.
Restore Rotation
Free up thoracic spine and hips so your shots and strikes keep their range.
Lower Injury Risk
Address asymmetries and overloaded tissue before they tear under sparring load.
Faster Turnaround
Flush heavy legs and forearms between sessions so you hit the mats fresh.
Grip & Forearm Relief
Targeted forearm and elbow work for the grip fatigue every grappler carries.
Fight-Week Prep
Lighter pre-fight work that leaves you loose and sharp, never flat or sore.
COMMON INJURIES
Injuries We Treat in MMA
Neck & trap strain
From clinch, sprawls and defending takedowns. Deep release plus mobility work restores rotation and eases headaches.
Lower back tightness
Wrestling and repeated hip extension overload the erectors and QL. Treatment targets the hips as much as the back itself.
Hip flexor & adductor strain
Guard work and shooting doubles load the groin hard. Graded soft-tissue work helps it settle without losing range.
Shoulder impingement
Overhead grips and heavy sparring compress the rotator cuff. We free the cuff and reset scapular position.
Forearm & elbow overload
Golfer's elbow from gripping gi, gloves and pads. Focused forearm and elbow work plus load advice.
Calf and shin tightness
Kicking and footwork leave the calves loaded. Release plus taping keeps the ankle moving cleanly.

RECOVERY ADVICE
How to Recover Properly Between Sessions
- 01
Book around camp, not around pain
Fortnightly during general prep, weekly in the final four weeks, and a lighter session 3–4 days before a fight — never the day before.
- 02
Protect sleep first
Nothing you do in a recovery session outperforms 8 hours. Cutting weight on 5 hours' sleep is how fighters get hurt.
- 03
Mobilise the hips daily
Five minutes of 90/90 and couch stretch after training keeps the hips from stiffening as camp volume climbs.
- 04
Fuel the hard weeks
Under-eating during a weight cut slows tissue repair. Keep protein high even when calories drop.
- 05
Report niggles early
A tight adductor treated in week two takes one session. Torn in week six it costs you the fight.

“I was experiencing a lot of muscle tightness. Not only was the session great but Derek also gave me a list of things I could do to improve outside of the sessions. Service was brilliant 👍🏼”

“I had a chronic shoulder issue after a cycling accident years back and after seeing Derek I finally started back to recovery. Aside from the incredible sports massage, he set me up with some strengthening exercises and I can finally sleep on my left side again. 10/10, would recommend.”
